Tale of the tape – the boy

It turns out that Marc is big kid. At his last doctor visit, his school physical, he was tracking off the chart in height and weight, whatever that mean. This is not news to us but he is in 6th grade (he would be in 5th if he didn’t start school at the FISW), he is 5′ 3″ tall.

Marc hits golf balls left handed. That is pain in the ass because it is hard to get any of the discount stuff for so-called lefties. Mind you, he is right handed but he has hit everything this way since he was little. I ordered him some junior clubs, age 10-12, last year when he was 9. He was at the driving range with me this summer and kept whiffing. Now Marc isn’t preternatural but he has had a pretty good swing since he was a kid. Good hand to eye co-ordination, in general, he normally doesn’t do a lot of whiffing. He got a little frustrated.

I mentioned this to another golfer dad, Dave. Dave said, in kids, that often means the clubs are too short. Dave had just ordered new clubs for his son, and it almost eliminated the whiffing. He suggested that I measure Marc. Well I did and the result is that Marc’s clubs were 4.5 inches too short. In fact, he measures to standard men’s clubs minus 1 inch. That is the same as women’s full size. So much for age 10-12. Ther were probably was too short from the get go.

Marc also was stinking up the house with his shoes that we bought for his trip back east this summer. These are technically water shoes so they have no support and a lot of vent hole for water. But he doesn’t wear them in the water and they stink. He wasn’t wearing any other pair of shoes and he never wore socks. He hasn’t wore the sandals or sneakers we bought him in the spring since school ended. The smell was just awful if he took off his shoes in the car, which he always does. I convinced him to go with me to the shoe store. We’d get some running shoes so that’s he’d have some options. I told him that running shoes have ventilation and are really made to handle sweat. They would not smell quite as bad, hopefully. The doctor at his physical scolded him on the smell and told him that socks would help a lot.

So I brought him to the shoe store. Well, it turns out the size 6 shoes are at least one size too small. In other words, the shoes we bought this summer are already too small. I ended up buying mens size 8 running shoes (they tend to be small). No wonder he doesn’t wear anything else and no wonder he never wears socks. There is probably no room.

Man it’s hard to keep up with these kids and we only have two of them.
